Government today eased the norms for import of mobile-based tracking system for vehicles, amidst a demand for greater monitoring of public transport vehicles in the aftermath of the rape of a young executive by an Uber cab driver.
"No license is required for import of GSM/CDMA based vehicle tracking system having a valid International Mobile Station Equipment Identity (IMEI) / Electronic Serial Number (ESN) / Mobile Equipment Identifier (MEID) number," a notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said.
IMEI, ESN and MEID are unique numbers for electronic devices that supports SIM card.
Recently, a taxi driver of an Uber cab had allegedly sexually assaulted a female executive which led to hue and cry over these App-based cab services.
Government wants to install GPS-based tracking system in all auto-rickshaws and taxis in Delhi but the move has been resisted because of high import cost of such equipment.
