While others are trading charges and counter charges at election rallies, Independent candidate, T Ramasamy, popularly known as "Helmet" Ramasamy contesting from Madurai Lok Sabha constituency, says "the joy of meeting the people is enough for me."
He is not bothered about losing. "I might secure about 500 votes," but that has not deterred him from doing the rounds on his trusty two-wheeler, canvassing support from amused gatherings.
To spread the message of importance of wearing the helmet among the two wheeler riders, he is using "Helmet" as his symbol, introduced for the first time in the state.
The Election Commission might have fixed the expenditure ceiling for Lok Sabha polls at Rs.70 lakh per candidate in big states. But Ramasamy claims he has spent only Rs.2500 so far besides the candidate's deposit amount of Rs.25000.
He justifies contesting the polls, paying Rs 25000."I cannot afford the amount. But I enjoy contesting..Because I am able to meet 25 lakh people, if not voters.I develop the skill to meet big people and IAS officers and speak to them."
He also feels that it is his duty, as an auto mechanic, to promote wearing of the helmet.
He says he had cheated death twice thanks to the helmet. "Once, I was knocked down by a bus but despite being hurled from the scooter, I survived because of the helmet," he says.
Ramasamy had contested the 2011 city Mayoral polls here without success. "But I got many friends by contesting the elections. Now I hope to expand my friends' circle," he says, much to the amusement of the locals.
