India has promised to support America's diplomatic efforts against the dreaded Islamic State, the terrorist organisation that has gained control over a large part of Syria and Iraq, a top US diplomat has said.
"The Indians committed to again be a strong supporter of the anti-ISIL diplomatic effort," Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Right, Sarah Swell told foreign journalists here.
"They (India) have their own views about how they can best contribute to maintaining stability within India with regard to the global terrorism scourge of which ISIL is one part," Swell told reporters in response to a question.
"For the United States, one of the consistent themes of our concern about ISIL is that not only is it a terrorist organisation that has tremendously destabilising goals, but it has tremendously rights-abusing practices that we've seen time and time again and to which the United States has consistently drawn attention," she said.
During her recent trip to India, she said, she discussed regional issues relating to terrorism.
"We discussed a range of areas in which the two countries are currently cooperating on everything from the programmes that we have under the Anti-terrorism Assistance Programme to work on professionalisation and capacity-building of - for example, in community policing. So we have some programmatic issues that were under discussion," Swell said.
"But we also have a robust discussion with the Indians about the listing of terrorist organisations, about information sharing related to terrorism.
"There's a very wide-ranging agenda there that I think will only deepen over time, and it was very important to be able to speak both with the home ministry and with the ministry of foreign affairs about the different elements of that relationship," she said.
