Indian-American woman becomes first post master in California

Jagdeep Grewal, a 57-year-old Indian-American has been elevated as the Postmaster in Sacramento in the US state of California, becoming the first woman to occupy the post in 166 years.
Grewal was sworn in as Sacramento's first woman postmaster on September 3, according to the US Postal Service.
"Following in the footsteps of Sacramento's first postmaster, Henry E Robinson, Esq, in 1849, Jagdeep Grewal will be the 29th Postmaster to serve the city," the US Postal Service said in a statement.
She will oversee 1,004 employees who process and deliver mail on 537 city routes and 94 rural routes - and fill nearly 20,000 post office boxes.

The postal service has been operating in Sacramento since the Gold Rush and Pony Express days, but a woman has never been the city's postmaster, The Sacramento Bee reported
Grewal, began her career with the Postal Service as a window clerk in 1988. She became a manager five years later and worked her way up the ranks, including a stint as postmaster in Pacifica-Daly city, the report said.

"It is only through joint effort and collaboration that we can truly meet our mission of providing extraordinary service while keeping costs down," said Grewal in a statement.
The US Postal Service has been battling a decline in mail volume due to consumer reliance on the Internet and private company package delivery.

Grewal said she looks forward to working with Sacramento's postal service employees during a challenging time.
