An Indian national, freed after being held captive in Sudan's North Darfur region for 94 days, appears to be "unharmed" and in good health, the UN said today.
Irfan Jaffery will be flown back to India "as soon as possible", the UN mission in the Sudanese region said.
Jaffery is an international contractor working at the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).
He was abducted in El Fasher, North Darfur, on March 11 and was freed yesterday in Kabkabiya, after 94 days in captivity.
Jaffery was immediately taken to the Mission's hospital in El Fasher for medical checks. He "appears to be unharmed and in good health. He will be flown to Khartoum and back to his home country as soon as possible," UNAMID said in a statement.
The African Union - United Nations Joint Special Representative for Darfur, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, expressed the Mission's gratitude to the Sudan government, Sudan's National Intelligence and Security Services, the Governor of North Darfur and the Indian government for their "valuable assistance in the safe release" of Jaffery.
On March 11, at approximately 8 pm, Jaffery was walking with a colleague in a residential area in El Fasher when he was kidnapped by a group of armed men.
