Parminder Singh, 29, allegedly killed his 23-year-old wife, Nikita Chawla, after he checked her mobile phone, which he believed confirmed his suspicions about her infidelity, a local court heard.
After killing her in his house here early yesterday, he called police and admitted to repeatedly stabbing his wife using a knife, prosecutors told the court.
He was arrested from his house and charged with one count of murder yesterday.
The accused appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court and confessed to the killing following which he was remanded to custody to appear in the court on May 1.
The accused made no application for bail.
His lawyer informed the court that Singh had seen a psychiatrist in the past for anxiety issues.
The court noted it was his first time in custody and arranged for a mental health assessment to take place.
Police is conducting the investigation and CCTV footage, DNA and forensic evidence are being analysed, the Herald Sun reported.
