Ronan Ghosh, who heads a global recycling firm with a turnover of 16 million pounds, was caught on CCTV shoplifting meat and wine worth 200 pounds (USD 300) from a Tesco supermarket in Birmingham.
Ghosh, who lives in a luxury house in leafy Solihull, tried to smuggle the goods out of the supermarket Tesco on Stratford Road by hiding them in a bag. After he was spotted on the store's security cameras, police were called on February 21.
Judge Murray Creed sentenced the businessman to 12 months' community order yesterday and he was ordered to complete 80 hours unpaid work and pay 575 pounds.
Charnjit Jutla, defending Ghosh, said, "He's the director of RG Recycling, a limited company that supplies high-value machinery for the recycling industry.
"It is a global business. It has a turnover of 16 million pounds. It beggars belief as to why he finds himself in this court. He had no financial difficulties. He accepts full responsibility for what he has done."
