The man identified as Baldev Singh Kalsi who is also the president of the Brookside Sikh Temple in Surrey of western Canada's British Columbia province was charged with aggravated assault after his wife was taken to hospital on Sunday in serious condition, the Global news reported.
"We received a call at around noon Sunday that a woman was in distress at a home in South Surrey, near 194 Street and 32 Avenue", Royal Canadian Metropolitan police said.
When they arrived at the scene, they found the woman with life threatening injuries. She was transported to the hospital by a British Columbia Air Ambulance, they said.
Kalsi will appear in court tomorrow in Surrey as Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the investigation.
