Ayres, a strong advocate of Indo-US ties, became the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs in August 2010. She served in the position till early 2013 and was responsible for providing policy direction to US embassies and consulates covering six countries- India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Maldives.
