"The probe, ordered by the Maharashtra DGP, has begun," Raigad Superintendent of Police Mohammed Suvez Haque told PTI today from Alibaug.
The inquiry would consider all facets of the alleged lapses by then police officials, Haque said.
"Pen police station got information about a burnt body dumped at the spot on May 23, 2012. Three constables visited the spot and conducted a spot panchnama. A doctor was called in to do a spot port-mortem. The body parts found were then sent to the JJ Hospital in Mumbai," the IPS officer said.
The SP had recently said a preliminary probe found that the police also did not collect the report from the JJ Hospital's anatomy department, as required.
The inquiry will also try to find out why the report was not collected.
The original documents of the case have been handed over to Mumbai police and on the request of Investigating Officer the skeletal remains were exhumed on Friday.
The investigators had on Friday sent a team which dug the ground at the spot where the body was dumped in Raigad district, and had found skull and some skeletal remains purportedly of Sheena Bora.
