Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) today reported a net loss of Rs 516.03 crore for the quarter ended December 2014 due to higher provisions for bad loans.

IOB is the first public sector lender to post a loss during the quarter among banks which have announced the results.
The net loss is due to increased provisions for domestic and overseas advances and also due to the conscious decision by the bank in containing its credit growth, IOB said in a statement.

However, the total income increased to Rs 6,647.45 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2014 from Rs 6,190.26 crore in the same quarter last fiscal.
Operating profit of IOB also declined to Rs 726.32 crore as against Rs 960.73 crore in the year-ago period.
