Irani seeks suggestion from IITs on curriculum changes at

HRD Minister Smriti Irani has asked IITs to suggest curriculum changes at the school level so as to align them with higher education institutions and help in setting up innovation labs at district level to infuse a culture of research and innovation among students.
A committee of directors and chairmen of IITs has also been constituted to address the issue of teacher shortage and manpower requirement in various sectors.
Besides, they have been asked to come up with suggestions on various policy constraints and strategies to involve IIT alumni and leveraging on the alumni network for development of IITs and the nation.
At a meeting with directors and chairmen of 16 IITs in Goa recently, she asked the IITs to help set up centres of excellence in central universities and develop a framework on ranking system that would reflect national concerns.
Irani asked IITs to also develop a special programme for students of northeastern states, exposing them to the best of the institutions like IITs in different parts of the country, said a ministry statement.
IIT Guwahati Director will coordinate efforts in this direction and submit a report by the middle of August.
Irani said the government was planning to come up with a National Innovation Policy.
She said there was also a need to develop quality faculty not only for new IITs, IIMs, IISERs but also other institutions in the country.
In this regard, she asked directors of IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur to come up with a national initiative on summer/ winter lectures by best of the foreign and the national faculty.
