Given lack of "intelligent transport" system in India, the International Road Federation (IRF) has planned several roundtables in the next 15 months to push the agenda forward.
The Geneva-based global body working for better and safer roads said the first of such initiatives 'Chalo India' on intelligent transport system (ITS) will be held in New Delhi this month, supported by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
"ITS has significantly reduced road accidents, congestion and pollution, and attracted sustainable financing in many countries worldwide," said K K Kapila, Chairman, IRF.
He said, "However, till date, ITS has not been deployed widely enough in India. The IRF will bring together national and local government officials and senior executives onto one platform to jointly lead and transform policy, legislation, finance and technology to create the right market conditions and partnerships to fully leverage the potential of ITS."
IRF said the roundtables to be held over the next 15 months will bring together representatives of several leading international and Indian companies and government officials to develop an action plan for better, faster and efficient exploitation of ITS to promote 'SMART mobility'.
Extensive application of ITS can also be an important part of other initiatives of the government, namely, Make in India, Smart Cities and Digital India, besides streamlining transport issues, it said.
ITS has delivered important but incremental changes to transport systems worldwide.
It has provided significant benefits from deployments of dynamic speed zones and active lane management, ramp metering, traveller information systems, e-tolling and other well established systems, IRF said.
