"I was really surprised when I first heard about the nomination. Being nominated was already such an honour, so to win the award itself is an incredible feeling," Prateek told PTI.
The Delhi-based artiste was nominated in the category with music heavyweights such as sitarist Anoushka Shankar, singer Monica Dogra, indie bands Bandish Projekt, and Uday Benegal and Friends.
"I clearly have some really loving fans, who voted for me and made this happen. A big thank you to all of them!" he says.
The award was earlier won by Priyanka Chopra in 2015 and singer-rapper Honey Singh in 2014.
The award comes in the backdrop of Prateek's two sold out shows in Mumbai and Delhi in September. He was nominated for his song '100 Words'.
His debut album 'In Tokens and Charms', which released in January last year, was adjudged as the best Indian indie album in 2015 by iTunes.
The "Tune Kaha" singer is now set to perform at Magnetic Fields Festival at Alsisar in Rajasthan next month.
The singer's style of blending minimally arranged melodies with intense lyrics has found fans all over the country.
"I'm a songwriter more than anything, and I always want the focus to be on the songs. That's what lies at the heart of doing these shows."
"We want to ensure an incredible listening experience, which is not always the case with club shows. We received a great response when we did a show last year, and we want to take things up a notch higher," says Prateek.
He made his debut in Bollywood with the 'Kho Gaye Hum Kahan' song in the movie "Baar Baar Dekho", which he wrote and sung with musician Jasleen Royal.
