Ittehad-e-Millat Council's national president, Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, was today stopped from going to strife-torn Kasganj and taken into custody.
The maulana was taken into custody here when he was on his way to Kasganj town and was taken to the the Police Lines, City Magistrate U B Singh said.
He was, however, released after an hour, on the condition that he will not visit the town, he said.
Speaking to reporters later, Khan accused the state government of taking one-sided action in connection with the trouble in Kasganj.
This will not be tolerated, he said.
Khan said that he going to Kasganj to make an appeal for peace and restoring normalcy.
The maulana said that he had also handed over a memorandum addressed to the President demanding a compensation of Rs 50 lakhs to the family of Chandan Gupta and Rs 25 lakh to the injured.
He said that he had also demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident.
On Republic Day, at least three shops, two buses and a car were torched after Gupta was killed in clashes following stone-pelting by a mob on a motorcycle rally taken out to celebrate the day.
Organisations like the Vishva Hindu Parishad, Hindu Mahasabha and ABVP had taken out the rally - 'Tiranga Yatra'. Some people objected to its passage and this resulted in heated exchange of words.
Eventually the matter escalated and firing took place in which Gupta lost his life.
Khan also said that he had also planned to handover a cheque of Rs 1 lakh to the family of Gupta and Rs 50,000 to those injured.
