Jahangir seeks probe into assassination plot by Pak officials

Pakistan's leading human rights activist and lawyer Asma Jahangir has sought a probe into an alleged plot to assassinate her in India by Pakistani security agencies.
She demanded the Pakistan government take prompt notice of the news and find out the forces who wanted to silence her.
In a statement given out in Urdu, she said that her well wishers had already told her about the murder plot and she had disclosed it at a press conference some months ago.
She said she had been struggling for democracy and protection of human rights in the country and her voice could not be silenced.

Washington Post had reported US intelligence agencies had uncovered evidence of a plot hatched by Pakistani security officials to use militants to kill Jahangir, known for her hard hitting views and opinion against the security establishment here.
Citing classified documents provided by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, the Post said in May 2012, the US agencies found out that Pakistani security officers were plotting to "eliminate" Jahangir.
This was part of the summary of a top-secret Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) report.
The DIA did not identify which officers were plotting to kill Jahangir, but it said the plan "included either tasking militants to kill her in India or tasking militants or criminals to kill her in Pakistan".
