The jeweller, identified as Deepak Kumar alias Tenu, was returning home last night after shutting shops when he was taken to a shop where he was offered liqour laced with poison, the police said.
Tenu was taken to a hospital where he died during treatment, the police said.
Meanwhile, the local people burnt tyres at the Gandhi chowk and staged demonstration demanding arrest of the culprits.
The deceased jeweller's wife has lodged a named FIR against the ward member Kabira Ahmed's husband Shafiq Ahmed alias Pappu Miaon, Guddu alias Iqbal, Suraj Thakur, Amjad and three-four other unidentified persons charging them with the murder of her husband, the police said.
