Actor-comedian Jim Carrey has come out in support of comedienne Kathy Griffin, who was fired by CNN after she posed with a photograph showing a bloodied and beheaded US President Donald Trump.
At the premiere of his new dramedy "I'm Dying Up Here", the 55-year-old actor said it was a comic's job to cross the line and even encouraged the sacked presenter to hold a "severed leg" of Trump's as well, reported Entertainment Tonight.
"Kathy Griffin, hold up a severed leg as well. It's the job of the comedian to cross the line at all times. That line is not real and if you step out into that spotlight and you're doing the crazy things that (Trump is) doing, we're the last line of defence. The comedians are the last voice of truth in this whole thing. It's impossible to get away from it," said Carrey.
Griffin later apologised by posting a 31-second-long video message, where she admitted that she went "too far".
"I'm just now seeing the reaction on these images... The image is too disturbing. I understand how it offends people, it wasn't funny, I get it... I am sorry. I went too far. I was wrong," she said.
But that did not stop the network from terminating Griffin's decade-long contract with her for New Year's Eve programme.
