The centrally-sponsored Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) here today announced it would soon perform liver transplantation.
The institute had obtained licence from the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry to perform liver transplants and all necessary arrangements were underway to make the facility available to the patients, Director of JIPMER Dr SC Parija told reporters here today.
He said the 52nd foundation day of JIPMER being celebrated on July 13, would highlight the importance of organ donation.
The hospital has performed as many as 84 kidney transplants since the introduction of the facility in 2013.
Besides, it has done 531 corneal transplants since 1997, he added.
Medical Superintendent and Head of Department of Cardiology J Balachander said the institute had applied for licence to perform heart valve transplant.
Noting that facility for bone marrow transplant was already available at the institute, he said steps were being taken to make tissue transplantation under 'multi organ transplant programme' available for patients.
Parija said the 2059-bedded hospital catered to the health care requirements of patients from Puducherry as well as neighbouring states.
The annual convocation of the institute was slated tentatively for July 30.
