Recalling the supreme sacrifice made by Brigadier Rajendra Singh while fighting tribals who raided Kashmir, the JKNPP today demanded that a Param Vir Chakra, India's highest gallantry award, be awarded to him posthumously.
"The Government of India should announce a posthumous Param Vir Chakra for the brave saviour of Kashmir, Brigadier Rajendra Singh, who laid down his life for the motherland on the intervening night of 26th and 27th October 1947," Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) chairman Harsh Dev Singh told reporters here.
Describing the late Brigadier as a symbol of Dogra pride and honour, the JKNPP chairman said, "The role played by the martyr was admired by one and all. He set an extraordinary example of dutifulness, chivalry and supreme sacrifice while fighting against very heavy odds."
He said that his sacrifice bought the then Maharaja Hari Singh valuable time to sign the Instrument of Accession and get help of the Indian Army, which defended Kashmir.
"Brigadier Singh assembled around 110 soldiers to fight with an invading force of over 6000 and his exemplary resistance followed by martyrdom eventually delayed the advance of Pakistani forces. Due to his valour, Maharaja was able to accede J-K with the Union of India on 26th Oct 1947 by signing the historic Instrument of Accession," Harsh continued.
Harsh Dev Singh urged the government to posthumously honour the Dogra soldier. He was the first recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra of independent India but his commitment and dutifulness toward the motherland and his impeccable courage and heroics deserved the PVC," Harsh maintained.
