In a step towards "inclusive" education, the Jawaharlal Nehru University will now offer digital courses in various disciplines under its newly-formed Special Centre for E-Learning (SCEL) platform.
"The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) wants to make its high quality education more accessible to not only those who join us through the highly competitive entrance examination, but also to those who cannot afford to join the university," Rana Pratap Singh, Rector-3, said in a statement.
"Through this new academic initiative, the JNU faculty are actively working to participate in the UGC's Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) offered at its SWAYAM platform," it said.
The initiative will help students from remote regions have access to JNU's vast range of courses, the release said.
The formation of SCEL platform had received nod from the varsity's executive council meeting on November 23.
"Universities should not remain as ivory towers. They should reach out to the society. One way of doing this is to make high quality education more inclusive through time and space independent learning," JNU Vice chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar noted.
