Around 97 per cent engineering students of Jadavpur University today voted for removal of Vice-Chancellor Abhijit Chakrabarti during a referendum.
Chiranjit Ghosh, general secretary of students' union Fetsu said around 97 per cent of 4,500 engineering students voted in favour of its campaign seeking the removal of the VC for calling in the police to break up a gherao on the night of September 17.
Students from humanities stream had already participated in the referendum and more than 80 per cent had voted against the VC.
The science stream students will soon vote in the third and last phase of the referendum.
It will, however, not have any official validity but is aimed to build up pressure on the VC to put in his papers if the students vote against him, Fetsu said.
JU students have been protesting for over a month against the VC for calling in the police into the campus during a gherao seeking a fresh probe panel in a student molestation case.
