Justice Debashish Kar Gupta, senior-most judge of the Calcutta High Court was on Thursday appointed as its acting chief justice, the Law Ministry has said.
He was appointed as the acting chief justice as present incumbent Justice Jyotirmay Bhattacharya is retiring.
Justice Kar Gupta will assume his responsibilities on September 25, a notification issued by the Department of Justice in the Law Ministry said Thursday. As per established norms, senior-most judge of the high court is appointed as the acting chief justice till a full-time chief justice is named.
Another notification said Justice Pritinker Diwaker, a judge of the Chhattisgarh HC has been transferred to the Allahabad High Court.
