The state government has decided to procure the accumulation of hazardous electronic waste in institutions and homes from the next month with the help of the Clean Kerala Company Ltd (CKCL), a state-run agency under the Local Self Government Department.
The collected waste will be handed over to a Palakkad-based firm Earth Sense Recycle Pvt Ltd, which will recycle it at its facility in Hyderabad, CKCL officials said.
All kinds of electronic and electrica waste, including discarded computers, laptops, television and radio sets, refrigerators, mixer grinders and other such articles, will be collected as part of the plan, they said.
"We have decided to procure e-waste by paying Rs five per kilo gram. All kinds of electronic waste ranging from computers and laptops to CFL lamps, tube lights and mobile phones are planned to be collected," CKCL Managing Director Kabeer B Haroon told PTI.
The company is also mulling to procure electronic waste from educational institutions directly, the official added.
Clean Kerala Company is set up to ensure comprehensive management of all harmful rejections in the state through scientific methods and proven technologies, they said.
