Kerala keen on high-end skill development in PPP model

The Kerala government is keen on high-end skill development in the state through public-private participation and aims to train 20,000 people in next fiscal.
"Being a fully literate state, we are looking at high-end skill development, including oil and rigs, healthcare, banking finance services sector, construction, security knowledge skills among others," Kerala Labour and Skills Minister Shibu Baby John told PTI here today.
"For this we are looking for partnership with the private sector, which will not only help in the training process but also in employment. We are expecting to train 20,000 persons in financial year 2017," he said.

People from Kerala have migrated to different parts of the world as well as the country for job opportunities, however, the international standards are constantly increasing and there is a need to upgrade the skills as well, John said.
For enhancing skill in the state, the Kerala government is organising 'Nyupunyam 2016' in Trivandrum between February 5 and 7 next year, in which the industry leaders will be invited for partnerships, he added.
"We are very happy to introduce a unique concept like Nyupunyam that strives to hone the skills of our workforce and make them global industry ready.

"With this summit we want to up the ante by bringing skills on par with international standards, so that the workforce can not only compete, but also earn better and thus improve their quality of life. Nypunyam International Skill Summit and Skill Fiesta 2016 is an attempt to transform the unskilled workforce from a liability to an asset," the minister said.

Kerala is also looking at inviting private sector to adopt Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) in the state for advanced skill development, John said.
"We have 76 ITIs in the state. We want the private players to adopt ITIs to give enhance industrial training in these institutes," he said.
Through these partnerships, Kerala is looking at guaranteed 60 per cent placements and international certifications so that one can easily land up a job overseas, the Minister added.
