Karnataka government is planning an 800 acre township at Tubinakere, located between Mandya and Srirangapatna, to decongest towns and cities along the Bangalore-Mysore corridor.
"After assessing the entire Bangalore-Mysore stretch, we found Tubinakere to be well suited for it has a good amount of dry land for the township," Karnataka Housing Minister M H Ambareesh told reporters.
Karnataka Housing Board will be the executing authority and the place is well connected by train, located on the busy national highway, and has a Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board industrial layout. It also has a University of Mysore study centre.
"Based on the success of this township, similar projects will be taken up across the state mainly to decongest towns and cities facing huge demand for residential sites," he added.
In other districts, the ministry has begun work to identify locations having good transport connectivity.
"Tubinakere will be our first exercise; once successful, we will be replicating it in other parts of the state," Ambareesh said.
He also said a fresh survey to launch affordable housing in a big way in the state would be taken up. "A fresh survey is being taken up to assess the number of households that do not have a roof of their own."
As per the survey done in 2003, there were 12 lakh people without a roof of their own and 39 lakh had no residential site.
"Recently, the state cabinet has cleared the housing department's proposal to take up a fresh survey. It will commence shortly," he added.
