An inspector and five policemen of Noorabad police station here were today line-attached and a departmental inquiry (DI) was initiated against them for dereliction of duties which allegedly led to escape of the driver who mowed down a constable this week.
Noorabad police station in-charge S D Mishra, sub- inspector G P Sharma, constables Munesh Singh, Rustam Singh, Shailendra Singh and Sushil Singh have been line-attached (withdrawn from active or field duties) and DI has been initiated against them, District Superintendent of Police, Navneet Bhasin, told PTI.
Constable Dharmendra Chouhan, 40, posted at Noorabad police station in the district was mowed down allegedly by sand mafia when he tried to stop a dumper carrying illegally mined sand from Chambal river near a village here on Sunday.
He said action against the policemen was initiated after their alleged laxity in discharging duty that led to the escape of the driver from the spot.
Driver (of the dumper) Tehsildar Gurjar was arrested yesterday and was charged under section 304 (culpable homicide not amount to murder) of IPC.
Cleaner Suraj Gurjar was also arrested yesterday.
On Wednesday, dumper owner Ramlakhan alias Bunty was nabbed on charges of carrying out illegal mining.
Acting on a PIL, Madhya Pradesh High Court banned sand mining in the river more than five years ago observing that it posed a threat to gharials (a species of crocodile) that lay eggs in the sand there.
In March 2012, IPS officer Narendra Kumar was mowed down by a tractor allegedly owned by sand mafia in Morena district.
A CBI probe was ordered and the accused, Manoj Gurjar, was later awarded a 10-year jail term.
