The carcass of the sheep was found Kharuda Gochha under Muzagarh forest range in Ghumusar North forest division, a forest official said.
The unknown animal or animals have killed at least 10 and 13 sheep at Bada Pathara and Kupati villages, respectively in the last one week, while a two-member team from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) visited Bhanjanagar to identify it on Sunday last, he said.
Forest officials have been carrying out patrolling in the area and the operation will be intensified at night, said divisional forest officer, Ghumusara North, Ramaswamy P.
"We have created awareness in the area on the need to keep the sheep in closed areas," the DFO said adding, leaflets with suggestions to be followed have also been distributed among villagers.
Sheep killing incidents have also been reported from Niali area of Cuttack district in the state.
