The tribunal, presided over by Ravinder Bedi, asked the United India Insurance Co Ltd, insurer of the offending auto-rickshaw, to pay Rs 16.21 lakh to the wife and children of east-Delhi resident Dhani Lal, who succumbed to the injuries.
"I award an amount of compensation of Rs 16.21 lakh in favour of the claimants and against respondents," the tribunal said.
"I am of the considered view that it is insurance company, which shall be responsible for the payment of compensation," it said.
As a result, Lal fell down and sustained grievous injuries, the complaint said, adding that he was rushed to a hospital where he died.
The driver of the offending vehicle fled from the spot. An FIR was registered in this regard against the driver and the family members approached the tribunal for compensation, they said.
The driver and the owner of the vehicle, however, denied the accident in their written submission before the tribunal and alleged false implication in criminal case.
