MACT Presiding Officer Dinesh Bhatt ordered Reliance General Insurance Company Limited, with which the offending vehicle was insured, to pay the sum.
"The insurance company shall pay the compensation of Rs 13,64,144 within one month to the family of deceased Mohan Lal," the judge said.
The tribunal awarded the compensation on a petition filed by the parents, widow and children of late Mohan Lal, who worked with a construction company here.
Mohan's wife had told the tribunal that he died after a rashly-driven car hit his scooter on June 28, 2011 near Miranda College, Delhi University here.
He was rushed to a hospital as he had sustained multiple injuries but succumbed to them during his treatment, she told the court.
Surender Singh, the owner of the offending car, contested the plea saying the accident was not caused due to his negligence and that it was Mohan, who was driving his vehicle in an inebriated condition.
The tribunal, however, rejected his arguments relying on the post-mortem report, as per which Mohan had died due to the blunt force impact caused by the accident.
