The Manipur government will develop the memorial of King Kangba at Kangmong village in Imphal West district as a heritage site to promote tourism in the state, a government official said here today.
Manipur Art and Culture Minister L Jayantakumar Singh, accompanied by local MLA S Ranjan Singh and Commissioner of Art and Culture Department M Luxmikumar Singh, yesterday visited Kangmong, where the last rite of king Kangba is believed to have been performed, he said.
Kangba ruled the kingdom of Kangleipak, presently Manipur, between 1405-1359 BC, according to historical records.
The art and culture minister, after visiting Kangmong yesterday, said the state government will develop the memorial to a heritage site, the official said.
"King Kangba is known for his contributions to Kangleipak during his rule. In fact, the Sagol Kangjei game, which later came to be known as polo, also originated in Kangmong during King Kangba's rule," the official said quoting the minister.
