"Compassionate Kozhikode", an altruism-promoting platform bringing together people who can enhance the reputation of the district as a holistic destination, has won the administration another international laurel, the Social Media for Empowerment (SM4E) Award, after winning the list of ITB-Berlin award recently.
Instituted by not-for-profit organisations, "Digital Empowerment Foundation" and "Friedrich Naumann Foundation", the SM4E award in the category of Community Mobilisation was given to "Compassionate Kozhikode" at a function this week in the national capital, a release from M D Niche, Media Consultants, said.
"It is a great achievement for the team. Only recently we got featured on the list of ITB-Berlin (world's largest tourism trade fair) as one amongst the 50 inspiring stories across the globe."
" And our initiative is just 13 months old", the release quoting Kozhikode district collector N Prasanth said.
"Compassionate Kozhikode", which shared the award with Annakshetra Foundation, strives to foster the Kozhikode people's ethos of sharing things for mutual betterment.
The SM4E awards this year were selected from among 266 entries from eight South Asian countries, the organisers revealed at the function on March 15, organised with the strategic partnership of Twitter, it said.
"Compassionate Kozhikode" has been widely discussed at national and international fora, with the annual World Travel Market in London having recently described it as a Ground breaking Destination Concept", Prasanth noted.
"Compassionate Kozhikode" comprises activities such as 'Operation Sulaimani'(a hunger eradication programme with dignity run through a community owned and crowd funded method), 'Savari Giri Giri' (safeguarding dignity to students travelling on concession tickets), 'Hey Auto' (a smartphone based application linking three-wheeler drivers with those hiring them), 'Sampoorna' (universalhealthcare insurance scheme), 'Yo Appooppa' (improving the life of the elderly) among others, the release added.
