Kamaraj Port Limited at Ennore near here would be setting up a Special Economic Zone or a Free Trade Zone over a 650 acre land, which it has recently acquired from the Union Salt Department, a senior official said here today.
"We have acquired around 650 acre of land from the Salt Department over which we are planning to set up a SEZ or FTZ. A feasibility report would be done soon as we get a consultant. We are primarily looking to cater to manufacturing industries," said M A Bhaskarachar, Chairman and Managing Director, Kamaraja Port Ltd.
Addressing a CII-organised conference on 'Approach to Integrated Maritime Systems' here, he said the port has also signed an MoU with Puducherry government yesterday to develop a port there.
"We have already done a feasibility report and a Detailed Project Report will be done soon. We are planning some three berths there. While the Union Territory government would provide the land, we will invest in the port," he said.
KPL also had a meeting with senior officials from the Tamil Nadu government to commence a cruise service from Ennore to Kanyakumari, touching upon coastal tourist destinations such as Mahabalipuram, Puducherry, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari, for which tenders would be floated to finalise on an operator, Bhaskarachar said.
Commenting on the expansion plans of KPL, he said the port was planning to construct up to five berths in the next five years.
