The nominations, which were announced today by Don Cheadle, Laura Dern, and Anna Kendrick, saw "La La Land" win nods for its lead pair Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, best musical or comedy film and Chazelle.
Coming-of-age drama "Moonlight" follows closely with six nominations.
The movie will compete with "Hacksaw Ridge", "Hell Or High Water", "Manchester By The Sea", and "Lion" in the best motion picture - drama category.
"Lion" is the moving true story of Saroo Brierley, a young Indian man, who tracks his family in India with the help of Google map years after being separated from them.
Patel will be pitted against Ali ('Moonlight'), Jeff Bridges ('Hell or High Water'), Simon Helberg ('Florence Foster Jenkins') and Aaron Taylor Johnson ('Nocturnal Animals').
Kidman, who plays Patel's adoptive Australian mother, is nominated in the best supporting actress role. The movie has also earned best motion picture - drama and best original score nominations.
Casey Affleck ('Manchester By The Sea'), Joel Edgerton ('Loving'), Andrew Garfield ('Hacksaw Ridge'), Denzel Washington ('Fences') and Viggo Mortensen ('Captain Fantastic') are set to fight it out for the best actor trophy in the drama category.
Amy Adams' performance as a linguist in sci-fi movie "Arrival" has earned her a nod in best actress in a drama category, in which she will be competing with Jessica Chastain ('Miss Sloane'), Ruth Negga ('Loving'), Natalie Portman in "Jackie" and French star Isabella Huppert for "Elle".
While Gosling is pitted against fellow Canadian and namesake Ryan Reynolds ('Deadpool') in the best actor musical or comedy category. Others who have made it to the list are -- Collin Farrell for the "Lobster", Hugh Grant for "Florence Foster Jenkins" and Jonah Hill for "Wardogs".
The 2017 ceremony, produced by Dick Clark productions and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, will take place on January 8. Comedian Jimmy Fallon will host the ceremony.

Chazelle will compete with veterans like Mel Gibson, who returns to direction with "Hacksaw Ridge", designer-director Tom Ford for "Nocturnal Animals", "Moonlight" helmer Jenkins and Kenneth Lonergan for "Manchester By The Sea".
The best screenplay category, apart from Chazelle and Jenkins, also features Ford, Lonergan and Taylor Sheridan for "Hell or High Water".
Justin Hurwitz of "La La Land" features in the best original score. The other nominees in the category are Johann Johannsson of "Arrival" Nicholas Britell, "Moonlight" Dustin O'Halloran, Hauschka, "Lion" and Benjamin Wallfisch, Pharrell Williams, Hans Zimmer for "Hidden Figures".
Two French films "Divines" and "Elle" will go head-to-head in the best foreign film category at the Golden Globe awards. The list also includes Chile's "Neruda", Iranian-French collaboration "The Salesman" and Germany's "Tony Erdmann".
"Zootopia", "Moana", "My Life AS A Zucchini", "Sing" and Kubo and the Two Strings" are nominated in the best animated category.
