Police said that the man, working in Tirupur, was taken in for questioning at that town on August 24 in connection with a cycle theft case.
He suddenly fell ill and was admitted to a private hospital here last night, allegedly with a neck problem.
He was shifted to the government hospital some time later, where he was declared dead around 2 AM today.
His two sisters, however, alleged he was tortured by police and that the private hospital had sought an exorbitant amount for treatment, following which he was shifted to the government hospital.
Police said they were awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death.
