Greta Gerwig-directed "Lady Bird" went into the Oscars up with five nominations, including Best Director for Gerwig and the Best Picture, but the female-helmed and -fronted coming-of-age film came out of the ceremony, empty-handed.
"Mudbound", Dee Rees' period drama, also failed to win in any of the four categories it was nominated, including the Best Cinematographer for Rachel Morrison, who was the first woman ever to be nominated in the category. Rees also went home without the trophy for Best Adapted Screenplay, which was bagged by James Ivory for "Call Me By Your Name".
Music composer Alexandre Desplat's win in the Best Original Score category for "The Shape of Water" came as a surprise to many, who wanted Hans Zimmer to get the trophy for his work on the film "Dunkirk".
Jordan Peele's win for "Get Out" in the Best Original Screenplay category was one of the most unanticipated moment at the Oscars given the heavyweights -- "The Shape of Water"and "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" -- were also nominated.
James Ivory's Best Adapted Screenplay provided the solace to the makers of "Call Me by Your Name", which had four nods at the Oscars. The film's lead Timothee Chalamet was overlooked in the category of Best Actor, while Sufjan Stevens' song "Mystery of Love" lost out to Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez's "Remember Me" from "Coco".
Paul Thomas Anderson's "Phantom Thread" went in to the Oscars with six nods, including nominations for Daniel Day Lewis for Best Actor and Leslie Manville for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. However, the film only managed to win the Best Costume Design award at the Oscars.
