Landslide kills 2, heavy rains worsen flood situation in Assam

At least two persons were killed in landslide in Assam even as the flood situation in the state worsened today following heavy rains in the last 24 hours.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), two persons were killed in Jorahat area in Kamrup Metropolitan district and two more were injured when a wall fell on them due to landslide.
In the wake of the floods in Guwahati, where many areas were inundated, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal directed the Chief Secretary and senior officers to go to the affected areas and ensure rescue and relief operations, besides providing all necessary assistance to the people.
ASDMA said more than 1.5 lakh people were reeling under floods in 294 villages across Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Nagaon, Jorhat, Golaghat, Morigaon, Biswanath and Barpeta districts.
Currently the Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger mark at Guwahati, Nematighat in Jorhat, Tezpur in Sonitpur districts and Dhubri town and Dhansiri at Golaghat town and Numaligarh in Golaghat, it added.
Authorities have opened 23 relief camps and distribution centres in three districts.
Nearly 7,000 hectares of crop have been damaged in these eight districts.
