Lathicharge on Congress workers

A protest march taken out by Congress workers to the District Collectorate here against the alleged bid to sabotage the probe into the rape case in which two CPI-M activists were among the four accused turned violent leading to police lathicharge today.
According to police, the activists were chased away when they pelted stones at the police and tried to break barricade put by the police. Three police personnel were also injured in stone pelting, police said.
Trouble erupted after Congress leader and former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had left the place after inaugurating the march.
Congress MLA from Wadakancherry Anil Akkara were among those injured in the lathicharge, Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said.
Congress in the district were on warpath alleging that indifference towards the probe and collectorate march was part of the agitation.
The woman had appeared before media last month alleging that she had been gang raped by four persons, including by a CPI(M) Councillor and a party activist two years ago and she was being harassed even now.
KPCC President V M Sudheeran demanded a judicial probe into police lathicharge.
He also alleged that police acted without any provocation.
He alleged police beaten up Congress workers including MLA Anil Akkara.
