Lawyer says cops filed 'false' case against him; moves HC

The Bombay High Court has issued notices to Mumbai Police Commissioner Ahmed Javed, the Maharashtra Home Secretary and others asking them to respond to a petition filed by a lawyer alleging he was "framed up" in a "false" case as he had taken up cudgels against local goons.
The lawyer said he had filed a police complaint earlier against certain people for indulging in anti-social activities in Antop Hill area here.
Hearing the petition yesterday, a bench of Justices V M Kanade and Anil Menon sought replies of the respondents, including Javed and the Home Secretary, and adjourned the matter to October 28.

Advocate Charanjeet Chandrapal submitted that he was assaulted on October 14 by some unidentified persons with sharp-edged weapons when he got down from his car at Wadala. He sustained serious injuries on face and lips, as a result of which he was administered 26 stitches in hospital.
According to the lawyer, the attack on him was a fallout of a complaint he had made against goons of the area who were indulging in drug peddling, car thefts, house break-in and other crimes.
Chandrapal said in the petition he had filed a PIL last year alleging illegal activities by anti-social elements in Antop Hill, following which police initiated action against the offenders. However, this angered the goons who retaliated by assaulting him, his petition alleged.

The lawyer said that after the recent assault on him, police registered a "false" criminal case against him on a complaint by the same persons who attacked him.
