Left-wing extremism (LWE) in Andhra Pradesh has been effectively controlled, a top police officer said here today.
The LWE, which has its tentacles in four districts of the state, has been effectively controlled, Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police J V Ramudu told reporters.
"The Maoists committed 24 offences in 2015 whereas two of them died in exchange of fire," he said, adding that while 100 ultras surrendered, 96 were arrested.
The DGP said that the red sanders smuggling was also checked by implementing various measures by the police.
According to the top cop, 2,710 red sanders smugglers including 40 international smugglers were nabbed.
"A major achievement of the police this year is the arrest of the notorious red sander smuggler Gangi Reddy who was deported by Mauritius," he said.
As many as 51 cases were booked under the Preventive Detention Act to check the smugglers, the senior police officer said.
The economic offences has increased from 105 cases in 2014 to 148 in 2015, Ramudu said, adding that the cases of cyber crime increased to 636 in 2015 from 410 in previous year.
There was a decrease in road accidents in 2015 but the death toll in the cases has increased in the current year, he said.
Number of road accidents came down from 22,444 in 2014 to 21,126 in 2015 but the death toll increased to 7,439 as compared to 7,162 in the previous year, the DGP said.
