Panic gripped the residents of Valparai town in the district following alleged sighting of a leopard in the human habitat.
The leopard was sighted around 10 PM last night by the residents, who were settling down for the night, police said.
The animal emerged from the government school premises and entered the market road, they said.
The residents immediately alerted the forest department officials, who rushed to the spot.
Efforts are on to trap the leopard, by placing cages at strategic points, they added.
