Referring to the recent price fluctuations in onions and potato in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today blamed the erstwhile Left Front government for not doing enough enough to increase their production.
"We have to get onions from Nasik, potato seeds from Punjab, fish from Hyderabad and Hilsa from Bangladesh. The state's potential to increase production have never been exploited by the previous government," Banerjee said at a rally here in Malda district.
Pointing out that the state was heavily dependent on other states for supplies, she said steps were being to raise onion output locally.
Farming of fish would also be increased in the state to meet demands with nearly 350 water bodies already brought under a scheme, Banerjee said.
Thanking the people for the huge mandate given by them to the Trinamool Congress in the just-concluded civic polls which saw it bagging four of the five civic bodies, the Chief Minister said "I am nobody. The total credit goes to the people ... I have come to politics not to profit monetarily. My life is dedicated for the cause of the people. I have not come to earn thousands of crores," she said.
She said that her party would run its election expenses with the minimum amount required.
She also said, "The Hindu-Muslim issue is raised whenever there are elections. Hindus and Muslims are all countrymen.
