The deposition of a 22-year-old woman led to her father being awarded life sentence by a local court for killing his wife over a petty quarrel.
Additional Sessions Judge M C Khadke, while relying on the account of eyewitness Seema Pintya Jadhav, the daughter of tribal Madhukar Shivram Khutade (40), sentenced the latter to life imprisonment for killing his wife.
Ganeshpuri's Deputy Superintendent of Police Srinivas Ghatge, who led the investigation into the case, told the court that Khutade, a resident of Palkhane under Bhiwandi police station limits in Thane district, had on August 6, 2012 brought mutton and wanted his wife Manisha to cook it.
However, the wife abused him following which the accused picked up an axe kept in the house and attacked her her, leaving her seriously injured following which she died, Ghatge said.
Additional Public Prosecutor Hemlata Deshmukh told the court that the evidence of Khutade's daughter Seema substantiated the prosecution theory.
The married daughter, in her deposition, told the court that she stayed in the neighbourhood of her parents.
On the afternoon of August 6, 2012, she heard the screams of her mother and rushed to their house where she was shocked to see her father attacking her mother with the axe, Seema said.
She also saw two bags, one containing mutton and another containing bananas, she said.
The daughter also said that her father fled from the scene after the attack and later she met him at the police station and asked him the reason for his act.
Her father replied that her mother had abused him and refused to cook mutton for him and hence, he attacked her with the axe, the daughter further said.
She also told the court that her parents frequently quarrelled over certain issues, to which she was a witness.
The court relied on various evidences before including the eyewitness account of the daughter of the accused and yesterday sentenced him to life imprisonment after holding him guilty guilty under section 302 (murder) of the IPC.
