The 67-year-old screen icon played the same part in the 1972 film version and she is waiting to see how the 32-year-old actress does in the role, reported E! online.
Williams and Alan Cumming will be taking on the iconic roles performed by Liza and Michael York in the movie adaptation of the long-running musical.
"Michelle is a wonderful actress and I love Alan Cumming. I'm excited to see what they will do with the show and am sure it will be great," Minnelli said.
"Michelle Williams is an actress of rare gifts and she will make an astonishing Sally Bowles," he said.
