A Lok Adalat here in Maharashtra Saturday settled as many as 174 death and injury claims amounting to Rs 12.61 crore, an official said.

Chunk of the total amount, Rs 2.18 crore, was settled in the name of two engineers who were killed in separate road accidents.

"A total of 2000 matters were placed before the Lok Adalat in different categories today. The death and injury claims of 174 people amounting to Rs 12.61 crore have been settled," said MR Deshpande, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority.

The deceased engineers are identified as Dadahari Chandanshive (45), an employee of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Sachin Ghanekar (33), a marine engineer with an engineering company.

Chandanshive was a resident of Kalwa in Thane district and Ghanekar of Panvel in Raigad district.

He was killed when his car collided with a truck on April 3, 2015 when he was returning to Kalwa in Thane district from Osmanabad.

The kin of the deceased raised a demand of Rs 1.75 crore in their petition filed with the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal (MACT). On the other hand, the general insurer calculated the dependency to the extent of 3/4th of the total income of the deceased.

The cheque of compensation was handed over to family members in the presence of principal district judge N R Borkar and officials of the general insurance company.

Ghanekar was killed in a road accident involving a MSRTC (Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation) bus on December 28, 2014 in Panvel.

A "settlement document" of Rs 1,22,50,000 was handed over to the parents and wife of Ghanekar.

Other claims settled were of varying amounts in lakhs.
