LS Speaker heads to Geneva for Inter-Parliamentary Union meet

A parliamentary delegation led by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan today left for Geneva to attend the 133rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which kicks off tomorrow in the Swiss city.
The agenda of the five-day Assembly includes a general debate on the overall theme, 'The Moral and Economic Imperative for Fairer, Smarter and More Humane Migration' an emergency item relating to a major matter of international concern on which it appears necessary for the IPU to express its opinion, an official release said here.
The requests for inclusion of emergency items are made by Member countries. United Arab Emirates has submitted request for inclusion of Emergency item in the agenda of the Assembly, it said.
One of the delegates will participate in the discussion on Emergency item, it said, adding that Mahajan will address the Assembly during the General Debate.
According to the release, the four Standing Committees of IPU will meet during the Assembly, which will be attended by delegates.
Besides, the Women Parliamentarians and Governing Council of IPU will also meet during the event while the Forum of Young Parliamentarians of the IPU will share their views from a youth perspective on the agenda items of the Assembly and other outcomes, it added.
There will also be two panel discussions during the international gathering in which the Indian delegation will be taking part. The Indian delegation will also attend the meeting of the Regional Asia-Pacific Group, the release said.
