A suggestion by his political science teacher saw 18-year-old Tathagat Bhatia not only gain three crucial marks in the subject, but a jump in his overall score from 98.5 per cent to 99.25 per cent, catapulting him to all-India second rank in ISC (class 12) exam this year.
In ICSE (class 10) in 2015, Tathagat of Seth MR Jaipuria School had secured all India second rank by scoring 99 per cent.
"Being a single mother, it has been really a tough journey for me. My son has made me proud in every way. Thanks to him, I can face the world with pride," said his mother Sangita, a homoeopath, whose ecstasy knew no bounds after hearing her son's feat.
"The Council of Indian Certificate School Examinations (CISCE) has also confirmed that Tathagat is now all-India rank 2," she said.
Principal of Seth MR Jaipuria School Promini Chopra said, "ISC results were announced on May 29. We were feeling disappointed as Tathagat's name was missing from the national merit list. The boy did not insist on re-evaluation, but it was his political science teacher Preeti Singh, who insisted that we should go for re-evaluation.
"We were confident that if we go for re-evaluation, his marks would go up. After re-evaluation, his percentage jumped. It's definitely a big achievement for the school as well," she said.
She said the school has received an official confirmation from the board in this regard.
When contacted, Tathagat said, "Since I was not sure that whether going for re-evaluation will certainly guarantee increase in overall percentage, I was a little bit reluctant. However, it was my political science teacher, who insisted on going for re-evaluation."
The 18-year-old wants to pursue research in Mathematics and is preparing to pursue higher education from the University of Pennsylvania.
