Chavan is set to appoint young leaders to boost the morale of the workers of the Congress which has suffered a series of electoral setbacks, a party leader said on the condition of anonymity today.
Chavan, appointed as the president of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) in March 2015, formed the executive committee of the state Congress after a gap of one year.
According to the party leader, Chavan, a former chief minister, had been taking a review of all the cells of the Congress since the past one week.
A few cells remained non-functional due to these non-performing leaders and hence these cells were dissolved by Chavan, the leader said.
The important cells which will become defunct till the next appointments are made include the cells for social justice, higher and technical education, employment and self-employment, and Kutchi-Gujarati.
"Chavan wants to appoint fresh and young leaders keeping in mind the 2019 assembly and Lok Sabha polls. In August, once the national president of the Congress is elected or nominated, some tough decisions are expected to be taken in Maharashtra as well," according to the leader.
"The party will hold signature campaigns for those farmers who have not yet received benefits of the loan waiver (announced by the state government last month). The list of farmers with their signature will be submitted to Tehsildars (revenue official) during the campaign," Chavan said in a statement issued here.
Senior Congress leader and former Union minister P Chidambaram will kick off a party campaign against the recently-launched Goods and Services Tax (GST) from Pune.
