Maharashtra Congress will elect its Legislature Party (CLP) leader in a meeting to be held here on Thursday.
The new CLP leader will get the post of Leader of Opposition in the Assembly in the event of Shiv Sena, with its 63 elected MLAs, joining the Devendra Fadnavis government which is in "minority".
"After 15 years in government, Congress lost the polls with its tally in the Legislative Assembly coming down to 42 seats from from 82 (in 2009). The CLP meeting would be held at Vidhan Bhavan at 2 PM," said a statement issued by the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) today.
Congress Leader in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge will attend the meeting as Central Observer.
All 22 members of Congress in the Legislative Council and 42 elected MLAs have been invited for the meeting, the statement said.
BJP, which has 122 MLAs, requires support of 23 more MLAs to prove its majority on floor of 288-member House in the vote of confidence which will be held on November 12.
If Shiv Sena, which has 63 MLAs, joins the minority government headed by Devendra Fadnavis, the leader of Congress Legislature Party will get the post of Opposition Leader in Assembly.
Names of former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, besides senior party leaders like Patangrao Kadam, Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, Balasaheb Thorat are doing rounds as new CLP.
While Shiv Sena is humming and hawing over joining the government and talks with its erstwhile ally, BJP are reportedly stuck over Sena's demand for particular portfolios, NCP had already announced its unconditional outside support to BJP government.
NCP has 41 MLAs, one less than Congress, its ally in the erstwhile Democratic Front government in the state.
