Several areas in Maharashtra's Palghar district Tuesday experienced two tremors in a space of ten minutes, a senior official said.
The region has been hit by several such tremors since November last year, leaving people in the tribal-dominated district worried.
"Palghar experienced two tremors at 1:52pm and 2:02pm today. They were at a depth of 5 kilometres and the magnitude was between 2.9 and 3," said Santosh Kadam, chief of the Regional Disaster Management Cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation.
There were no reports of damage but officials have been asked to conduct a field check, he said.
He said the last such tremor, with a magnitude of 3.2, was recorded on March 31 at around 5:51pm.
Officials said Dundhalwadi village in Dahanu in the district has been worst hit, and residents in 75 adjoining villages have been provided tents as a precautionary measure.
These tents are used as class rooms during the day and as shelters in the night.
A couple of seismographs, also called seismometers, (instrument used to detect and record earthquakes), have been installed in the area, officials said.
